We bought a new GE range top microwave in March, 2008 because our 15 year old microwave was starting to act up. The new microwave was bigger and had some additional features we all enjoyed.
Who would have thought that 9 months later our microwave would catch fire. The scary part is that the microwave was not running at the time. Like every other range top microwave, it was plugged in and the clock was displaying the time.
The clock blanked out a couple of days prior to this incident. We thought at first it was a power failure, but noticed that no other displays in the house were blank. The clock came back on after a few minutes and we thought nothing of it. The last time the microwave was used was 24 hours before the fire to steam vegetables for 3-4 minutes.
We were not home when the fire occurred. Thankfully we arrived home a few minutes after the fire started and called 911; the fire chief said another 5 minutes, and we would have lost the whole first floor at least. Our kitchen was out of commission for about 2 months because of all the cleaning and construction.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The model number is LVM1750DM1BB. At the time of the fire there were no recall notices for this microwave. Look at the pictures below. What do you think?
