We bought a new GE range top microwave in March, 2008 because our 15 year old microwave was starting to act up. The new microwave was bigger and had some additional features we all enjoyed.
Who would have thought that 9 months later our microwave would catch fire. The scary part is that the microwave was not running at the time. Like every other range top microwave, it was plugged in and the clock was displaying the time.
The clock blanked out a couple of days prior to this incident. We thought at first it was a power failure, but noticed that no other displays in the house were blank. The clock came back on after a few minutes and we thought nothing of it. The last time the microwave was used was 24 hours before the fire to steam vegetables for 3-4 minutes.
We were not home when the fire occurred. Thankfully we arrived home a few minutes after the fire started and called 911; the fire chief said another 5 minutes, and we would have lost the whole first floor at least. Our kitchen was out of commission for about 2 months because of all the cleaning and construction.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The model number is LVM1750DM1BB. At the time of the fire there were no recall notices for this microwave. Look at the pictures below. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteMy microwave caught fire August 24, 2009 while melting chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Luckily I was able to put it out before there was any damage outside of the microwave. I reported this to GE and they offered to send a tech out to see if the microwave could be repaired. The tech came on August 27, 2009 and stated the cause of the fire was arcing from the shelf in the microwave. The shelf that came with the microwave. The shelf that the 8 brackets holds so you to use it in the microwave. He said it could not be repaired. He didn't look at the microwave, he didn't look to see if the fire was in the control panel. He did pull up a user manual for a microwave that said the shelf should not be stored in the microwave. What does that have to do with cooking in the microwave? Before he left he told me that I could replace the bracket. Now, if he said it couldn't be repaired, why is he telling me I can replace the bracket? He wasn't the most professional tech I've ever met on top of that. Very rude. Even slammed my door when he left! I called GE again to report his unprofessional behavior and they said they would message him to see if the microwave could be repaired or not. I have to wait another 24 hours. Model # HVM1540DM1BB.
ReplyDeleteMine just caught fire tonight....lucky I was in the kitchen at the same time the internal components started burning. Out of curiosity I googled the model number and found your posting. How did you make out with GE?
ReplyDeleteMine caught fire this morning while reheating a cup of coffee. Thank god I was in the kitchen and saw the flames and when I opened the door the fire went out. I called GE today and they just leave you on hold.
